When Should I Consider A Brow Lift?

Brow lift by Body by BlochSagging on the forehead causes frown lines which make you appear tired and aged. A brow lift also known as a forehead lift can surgically correct this condition that affects most aged men and women and even some young people. Forehead lift is one of the many cosmetic procedures that you can have at Body by Bloch run by Dr. Bloch, a leading Chicago plastic surgeon with the assistance of his qualified staff. Situations that can make you consider a brow lift include brows that are hooding your upper eyelids, frown lines running vertically between your brows or horizontally on your forehead. Wrinkles on your nose bridge or between your eyes can also be improved with the aesthetic procedure to give you a more pleasant look.

Preparing for brow lift surgery

In preparing for brow lift surgery, you may be asked to:

  • Get lab testing or a medical evaluation

  • Take certain medications or adjust your current medications

  • Stop smoking

  • Avoid taking aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs, and other supplements as they can increase bleeding

Brow lift surgery should be performed in an accredited surgical facility, licensed ambulatory surgical center, or a hospital. read more

Brow lift procedure

A brow lift will give you a nice vision after sagging skin is uplifted from your face. Several types of incisions are used on the procedure depending on your facial features or aesthetic preferences. Dr. Bloch and his team will help you choose the ideal incision to conceal scars. General anesthesia is used for your relaxation. Incision techniques include:

Endoscopic forehead lift – short incisions are made on the upper scalp and on both sides of the temple. Incisions are totally concealed within your hair. An endoscope, which is a long, narrow tube featuring a video camera at its end and a tiny light is inserted through the incisions. The plastic surgeon can then view the internal tissues he is working on.

Coronal, or open technique – incisions made begin just above the ears running across the scalp and are hidden in the hair. Skin is elevated and excess fat and skin are eliminated. Remaining skin is redraped and brow is repositioned.

Limited incision – incisions are hidden in temples. Limited incisions made on the temporal hairline zone allow even bald men to opt for this technique. The procedure may not correct the mid-brow area but works best for crow’s feet.

A combination of other procedures like face lifting or lower and upper eyelid tucks can be combined with a brow lift.

Considerations

Pros

  • Repositions a low or sagging brow that hangs over the upper eyelid

  • Raises the eyebrows to a more alert and youthful position

  • Makes you look happier, friendlier and more approachable

Cons

  • Only a highly experienced board-certified plastic surgeon can determine if this procedure will achieve your goals.

  • Choice of brow-lift technique is very important to outcome, so this procedure is very clinician dependent.

  • You may also need blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery), as a forehead lift does not improve baggy eyelids or crow’s feet.

After a brow lift surgery, your doctor will give you pain relieving medication as well as medications to prevent infections. To minimize swelling around your eyes on the first and second day after surgery, cold packs or icing will be recommended. Dr. Bloch advices his patients to sleep with head elevated and gives instructions on incision care and signs to watch out for which may result in complications. Though sutures will be removed after one week, you will be advised to stay away from strenuous activity. You can fully go to work after a month and resume most of your tasks including exercises. You will however experience some itching and numbness around incisions done with open incision technique for about 9 to 12 months. These will eventually fade away but return visits recommended by the plastic surgeon are worth.
