Are you Considering a Breast Augmentation with Lift?

Considering Breast Augmentation with a Lift?

Breast augmentation is normally carried out to increase the volume or size of breasts using implants which are shells containing saline or silicone gel. Breast lift or mastopexy on the other hand corrects droopy breasts. Both the procedures can be combined and Dr. Bloch from Body by Bloch is experienced in these cosmetic surgery procedures. You can consider augmentation mastopexy or a combination of the two procedures if you want to increase the size of your small breasts and have the loose skin reduced and tightened to give you a youthful breast contour. Breast lift also corrects enlarged areola and uplifts it together with the nipple.

Can Breast Lifting and Augmentation Be Safely Done in One Operation?

The researchers review their experience with performing breast lift surgery (mastopexy) and breast augmentation in a single procedure. Of the 430 breast lift procedures performed between 2005 and 2009, breast augmentation using implants was performed at the same time in 332 cases.

The women’s average age was 47 years; about one-third were undergoing reoperation after previous cosmetic plastic surgery to the breasts. To determine the safety of performing combined breast lift/augmentation, Dr. Calobrace and colleagues assessed the rates of complications and reoperations.

The overall complication rate for women undergoing simultaneous breast lift/augmentation procedures was about 23 percent. The most common complications were hardening (contracture) of the capsule around the implant, scarring and recurrent ptosis (drooping) of the breasts.

The same problems were also the main causes of reoperation after simultaneous breast lift/augmentation. Both complications and reoperation were more common in women undergoing secondary, rather than primary, breast plastic surgery procedures.

Breast skin may loose its elasticity for a number of reasons which include pregnancy, weight loss, breastfeeding, aging, heredity or gravity. The loose skin contributes in the sagging weight which makes breasts loose their youthful shape. Breast implants alone may correct or improve small breasts that have not lost their elasticity by inflating them. Mastopexy normally requires a larger incision than breast augmentation as incisions may extend for the areola area to your upper chest area. To give your breasts uplift, most plastic surgeons like Dr. Bloch remove excess skin tissue from the areola area and from the bottom of your breast. The remaining skin is then assembled and stitched. This tightens the breast at the same time raising it.

Am I a good candidate for a breast lift?

If you’ve become increasingly unhappy about the sagging of your breasts, you may wonder what surgery can do. Don’t be surprised if your surgeon suggests combining breast augmentation or breast reduction with your lift; adjunct procedures may be necessary to achieve your goals.

The following are some common reasons why you may want to consider a breast lift:

  • Breasts that are pendulous but adequate in size.

  • Breasts that lack substance or firmness.

  • Nipples and areolas that point downward, especially if they are positioned below the breast crease.

  • Breasts that appear different from each other; one breast may appear firm and well positioned while the other does not.

  • Breasts that are not equal in size.

  • Breasts that are relatively small.

  • Breasts that are large and heavy can be lifted, but the results may not be as long-lasting as a breast lift performed on smaller breasts; the weight of larger breasts works against surgical changes.

  • You are finished with childbearing and breast-feeding. If you plan to have children, you may want to postpone cosmetic breast surgery. Pregnancy may stretch the breasts and reduce their volume, compromising surgery benefits.

If you are in good general health, have a positive attitude and realistic expectations, you are most likely a good candidate for this procedure.

Breast augmentation with a lift is usually done on outpatient basis which may be in a hospital or in an outpatient surgery centre. If you are considering these procedures, arrange for someone to drive you home as there is no need to stay in the medical facility overnight unless complications arise. Look for accredited facilities like Body by Bloch owned by Dr. Bloch who works with a team of experts to help you achieve better results and quick recovery. The plastic surgeon will also discuss with you about your recovery and recommend return visits to check your progress.
