Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure done to correct the shape or size of the nose. Preparing For Rhinoplasty

In preparing for rhinoplasty surgery, you may be asked to:

• Get a lab test


• Take certain medications or adjust your current medications

How Is Rhinoplasty Done?

Your rhinoplasty Chicago doctor will recommend intravenous sedation or general anesthesia to calm you during the operation. Incisions on your nose will then be made. Either a closed procedure with inconspicuous incisions inside the nose is done or open procedure with incisions performed across the strip called the columella that separates the nostrils. After structural correction, nasal skin is then redraped and incisions done following the nose’s natural creases. Splints and gauze will then be dressed to support the nose as it heals.

Risks

You can always expect temporary swelling and bruising around the eyes and nose after rhinoplasty. Other problems that may occur include:

• Bleeding.


• Injury or holes to your septum (the wall that separates your nostrils).


• Skin problems, including breakdown of skin tissue (skin necrosis) and irritation from the tape and bandaging.


• Infection. Preventive antibiotics may be given after surgery to reduce the risk of infection.


• Serious nasal blockage caused by swelling inside the nose.


• Complications of anesthesia.

It is also possible that the cosmetic results of the surgery will not be what you wanted.

Recovery From Rhinoplasty

You will experience a puffy feeling on your face or notice swelling around your nose and eyes a few days following surgery. Swelling may persist for a few weeks though it may be on and off in the first year after rhinoplasty. Worse swelling is experienced in the morning. Using cold compresses reduces the pain and swelling. Your rhinoplasty Chicago surgeon will advice you to keep your head elevated a few days after surgery and restrict you from strenuous activity.
